Though marijuana is legal in Washington (!), that doesn’t mean it’s always appropriate for the scent of cannabis to permeate your home. It is a strong fragrance to say the least, potent and full of portent. The smell can take you back, through the persistence of memory, to the lazy, hazy summers of your youth: the best first night of college dorm life; the first time you saw live music that blew you away; driving around your hometown listening to Midnight Marauders; a chill beach vacation in Tulum, Mexico; a hike to the sublime summit of the tallest local peak. The odor is a kind of Proustian madeleine for many of us. However, the sweet smell of pot can also blow up your spot. If you would rather smoke more discretely, we’ve got a few ideas about how to hide weed smell at home.
To mask the scent of cannabis and contribute to the overall head vibe of your surroundings, light up a stick of Nag Champa. This sweet and pleasing incense, with notes of sandalwood and frangipani, is used in Indian ashrams as an aid for meditation and will carry you back to any Dead show/head shop/hippie mecca you’ve encountered. For some this is a happy association, and it definitely does the job. But if you want to eschew that old crunchy jam band feeling, there are lots of other ways to cover up pot smell.
For a cleaner way to hide weed smell, boil a cup of distilled white vinegar in a pot on the stove. This is a great technique to actually neutralize strong odors rather than just cover them up. You can also add essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus, and sage, that smell pleasant and mask the “bite” of the vinegar. Just don’t forget to turn off the burner! Other natural options include baking soda and activated charcoal, both of which are very effective in removing or nullifying odors. Use the latter in combination with an air purifier to keep the air around you clean and fresh.
We’ve all heard about, read about, or tried various other methods of covering up the smell of weed that work to varying degrees. The sploof (a filter made from dryer sheets and a toilet paper roll), burning popcorn, and smoking in the shower are typical suggestions that we feel are not helpful and in fact, pretty silly. Part of our mission is bringing marijuana out of the shadows and into the light of mainstream society, and providing good information is an essential part of that process.
Marijuana is now legal in so many places. It is used by artists, intellectuals, and spiritual leaders to all sorts of profound ends. Don’t degrade the practice by spraying Febreze in your room like a sneaky teen. Keep your environment clean, store your weed in mason jars, and open a window.
Here’s one last suggestion from the genius file. Before getting baked with a crowd, put a batch of chocolate chip and bacon cookies in the oven. Your home will be filled with a delightful aroma and you will have a tasty snack to share with your friends when the munchies hit.
